Skippy John Jones by Judy Schachner - It's about a cat that thinks it's a Chihuhua,  or at least fantasizes about being one.
Madeline by Ludwig Bermelans - About the eponymous little french girl, raised by nuns.
Anything by Roald Dahl - they're all good.
